Positive Traits of Highly Sensitive Person

If you have heard the word ‘EMPATH’, you might have been looing to find out why you feel like an island in a world full of different people.

The word empath, also known as ‘highly sensitive person’, defines a rare emotional and personality type. In relationships, it takes a certain type of friend, in fact to accept an empath for their emotional tendencies and quirks that even the empath at times cannot fully understand. Anxiety attacks, depression, an unhealthy relationship with food, drugs, or alcohol can all lead to an empath trying to avoid too much of the ‘feelings’ that come to them on a regular basis.

Being an empath is an experience both unique and blessed, as it means that one finds themselves among a small percentage of thinkers where passion for causes and change prevails. Are you an empath? Read the following traits to find out.

1.Sometimes you feel sad for no apparent reason

A sponge does not discriminate between clean and dirty liquids, it simply absorbs. An empath is like that, soaking in the energy themselves, whether positive or negative.

Often overwhelmed, an empath is said to take on the weight of the world, and due to their inherently sensitive nature, can experience bouts of sadness for no apparent reason. Seasonal changes, a woman’s ‘time of the month’, or experiencing some kind of loss are all ‘obvious’ causes of blues, but in our day-to-day life, emotional fatigue can suddenly set in like a freight train. They may assume that they are going through a depression, which can cause them to stop moving.

2. Random people really feel comfortable with you

Empaths have a knack for attracting the emotionally needy. Because they are so kind and such great listeners, random, blue strangers interact with them and might share their life stories. Ideally, when empaths want their quiet time, they should wear a sign that says ‘not open for business’, as, unfortunately, they are a dumping ground for problems and emotional baggage of others.

Thankfully they exist, what is better than to share your position with a naturally nurturing person?

3. You are soft-hearted

Despite being accused of being too soft at times, empaths are kind, gentle, and sympathetic. While most people walk by the homeless on the street, they are the ones who stop to lend a hand or apologize for not being able to do so.

They accept the need of those people and find it impossible to disconnect from a world they know is suffering. They make a sincere effort to make a difference and are passionate about many causes.

4. You have a general love of animals, children, and plants

Due to the pure unconditional love of pets, an empath cannot help but be drawn to these incredible creatures. They often prefer to live in the company of animals over humans. Animals are drawn to people of such a sensitive nature as they can feel loved back.

The naivety of children and of nature is equally emphasized, and, interestingly enough, an empath can be lost emotionally in the surrounding wilderness where they can ‘find’ themselves. They are deeply connected to nature, plants, forests, and anything not created by human hands.

5. You need solitude and, as often as possible, the comfort of nature

It is almost impossible for a true empath to be fully content in a boisterous city on a regular basis. For this reason, quiet ‘time outs’ are not only necessary but also useful to keep them more mentally stable. An empath can often find themselves alone by choice, as they lay their feet in the soil, feel the sunshine on their skin, smell fresh flowers from the earth, and take a full breath of fresh air.

It is not uncommon for an empath to travel alone and overcome emotional turmoil because they have trouble focusing when others are around.

6. You crowds disorganized and feel out of place

Street parades, events, parties, and other noisy surroundings may seem fun to most people, but not to empaths. Large crowds are a challenge because they can feel the energy of the people around them. Empaths might be known as hermits, feeling disconnected in these situations, as some do not fit with this environment.

This does not mean that they will not attempt to participate when asked, but they will require a retreat plan in advance. Most empaths will choose to take their cars, so that they can leave when they are good and ready.

7. You tend to daydream and move from idea to idea

An empath often asks random unrelated questions and often has a lot on their mind, switching from subject to subject. They are deep thinkers, creators, inventors, and problem solvers. Because they are looking forward to the next big thing, they can have a difficult time when they start it as a sentence or project. This gives their mind some relief from emotional fatigue.

They get bored easily, and if indifferent, can zone out in minutes.

8. Your mood can change from happiness to anger to sadness in no time.

With unexpected mood swings, an empath may not initially understand their emotional personality type until they have discounted all possibilities of being bipolar or depressed. Up and down like a roller coaster, they attract non-verbal energy and, if approached for dialogue, are open targets for people to tell their sad or harsh stories.

Empathy means experiencing the various emotions inherent in the stories being told. Super-sensitive empaths feel a responsibility to listen, soak in the emotional pain, and in some cases, absorb the physical symptoms that happen to the other person.

9.You have a hard time watching violent movies, reading news, or listening to offensive music

If someone in the cinema covered their ears after a violent scream or covered their eyes to avoid the gore of a cinematic death, chances are they were empaths. Empathy leads to difficulties thinking about and seeing war, fighting and hating, anything that is filled with negativity.

They have a hard time watching anything with violence, listening to aggressive music, and even reading the daily news. Negative stories about problems around the world have a greater impact on this highly sensitive individuals, who may soon live without owning a television to avoid  news of the world’s catastrophes several times a day.

10. You can see people’s masks and know what another person is thinking without them telling you

Let us call them ‘seekers of truth’ because the empaths are excellent at separating truth from falsehood. They can see a liar coming from miles away. Without hearing the whole story, their sensitivity allows them to ‘feel’ when another person is being honest.

If they play the role of being friendly to someone they don’t trust, their gut feels uncomfortable, and they find that they are not fully capable of pulling this off. They always know when someone is lying to their face.
